沙巴体育 Guest Lecture Report
June 20, 2025
As part of the Year of Excellence in Industry–Academia Collaboration at MAHE, the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, 沙巴体育 College of Nursing, MAHE, 沙巴体育, has organized an alumni guest lecture on the topic, ‘An 沙巴体育 Perspective on Nursing Management of Post-Surgical Oncology Patients’ on 12.06.2025. Ms. Vinita Rosa Monis, Registered Nurse at Michael Garron Hospital (Toronto East Health Network), alumna of BSc (N) 2018-2022 Batch, was the resource person. During her session, she emphasized the nursing management of patients with intercostal drainage, patient-controlled analgesia, Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain, Penrose drain, and colostomy. The session has aimed to enhance the clinical competencies of nursing students in providing specialized surgical and post-operative care for patients. The deliberation of the session was in alignment with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 4: Quality Education. The lecture comprehensively covered the indications, mechanisms, and step-by-step nursing care approaches associated with intercostal drainage systems, particularly in cases of pneumothorax and pleural effusion, focusing on aseptic care, air leak monitoring, and respiratory assessment. In addition, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) was discussed in detail, with emphasis on pain autonomy, drug administration safety, sedation monitoring, and patient education to ensure effective pain control with minimal risks. The nursing care and maintenance of JP and Penrose drains were addressed with a focus on drainage monitoring, infection prevention, documentation, and skin care around the insertion site. Colostomy management included pre- and post-operative nursing responsibilities, pouch application techniques, peristomal skin integrity maintenance, and psychosocial support for patients adapting to altered body image and bowel elimination patterns. The speaker skilfully linked each clinical aspect with nursing responsibilities and encouraged students to practice compassionate and culturally sensitive care. The session also highlighted the integration of SDG 3 by promoting optimal post-operative care and complication prevention to improve recovery outcomes and reduce patient morbidity and mortality. SDG 4 was addressed by promoting competency-based learning and skill acquisition through an expert-led, interactive educational platform that emphasized experiential learning, clinical reasoning, and safe practice. A total of 134 undergraduate students, including four faculty members, attended the session. The session was concluded with a closing remark by Ms. Aarushi, a 4th-semester BSc Nursing student of MCON, MAHE, 沙巴体育, and it was well appreciated by the participants.
